Portrait, a photography organisation, held a two-day photography event at Rangamati Press Club to mark the 200th anniversary of photography on Friday, said a press release.
Veteran journalist Osman Gani Mansur attended the program as the chief guest while Chattogram Press Club General Secretary Golam Mowla Murad was present as special guest.
Portrait Director Rupam Chakraborty delivered the welcome address.
Speakers said that after two centuries, photography has become more than just a technology for taking pictures; it is now a powerful medium for preserving history.
“A photograph can capture a moment, tell the story of an era, and present the joys and sorrows of people, nature and the realities of society to future generations,” they said.
Photography has evolved with technological advancements and no matter how advanced technology becomes, a photographer’s greatest strengths remain the ability to see, recognise the significance of the right moment and tell a story through images, they observed.
A photographer does not merely take pictures; they preserve time, become witnesses to history and bring untold stories of society before the people,” the speakers said as they expressed hope that the future of photography would be more creative and humane and remain dedicated to the pursuit of truth and beauty.
Presided over by Rangamati Press Club President Anwar Al Haque, the event was addressed among others by former Rangamati Press Club president Sunil Kanti Dey, its General Secretary Mohammad Elias, programme convener Bulbul Ahmed and Lion Piyush Talukdar.
Besides, photojournalist Supriya Chakma, Roads and Highways Department Executive Engineer Sabuj Chakma and photojournalist M A Bashar were honoured at the programme.
