A report released by the Road Safety Foundation revealed that 621 road accidents occurred across the country in January. These accidents resulted in 608 fatalities and at least 1,100 injuries.
The statistics, which were shared in a press release on Tuesday, February 4, highlight the severity of traffic-related incidents in the first month of the year.
Among the reported accidents, 271 were motorcycle-related, resulting in 264 deaths. There were four boat accidents that claimed six lives, and 22 rail track accidents led to 26 fatalities and seven injuries.
The Road Safety Foundation compiled this data from nine national newspapers, seven online news portals, various electronic media outlets, and its own research.
According to the foundation’s report, the victims included 264 motorcyclists, 28 bus passengers, 34 truck, covered van, pickup, tractor, and trolley passengers, 19 private car, microbus, and ambulance passengers, 90 three-wheeler passengers (including rickshaws and CNG auto-rickshaws), 18 passengers of locally made vehicles (such as Nosimon, Bhatbhati, Mahindra, and Tomtom), and 12 bicycle and rickshaw passengers.
The report further breaks down the accidents as follows: 214 occurred on national highways, 265 on regional roads, 96 on rural roads, and 42 in urban areas, with four occurring at other locations.
The causes of the accidents were varied, with 133 head-on collisions, 258 accidents caused by loss of control, 141 pedestrians being hit, 75 rear-end collisions, and 14 accidents caused by other factors.
These findings underscore the continuing dangers on the roads and the urgent need for road safety measures to prevent further loss of life.
