3 more arrested over JCD activist Shammo’s murder

Law enforcers on Tuesday night arrested three more accused over the murder of Chhatra Dal activist and Dhaka University (DU) student Shahriar Alam Shammo, bringing the total number of detainees to six, the university authorities confirmed in a press release on Wednesday.

DU authorities are communicating with law enforcers round-the-clock to swiftly detain all those involved in the murder on Suhrawardy Uddyan over a week ago, the press statement noted.

Furthermore, during a meeting with DU officials, Shammo’s family has expressed satisfaction at DU’s assistance for the murder investigation, the press release added.

Shammo’s father, Md Fakrul Alam, expressed his gratefulness and satisfaction to DU authorities in a meeting with DU Vice-Chancellor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan on Wednesday, sources said.

Three brothers of Shammo as well as DU treasurer and association of the proctor were also present at the meeting.

Chhatra Dal has alleged the law enforcers are dragging their heels in detaining all the murder suspects. BNP’s student wing has also demanded the resignation of DU VC and proctor for failing to ensure security for Shammo, even though the murder took place outside DU campus, and beyond the purview of DU authorities.

Chhatra Dal blockaded the Shahbagh intersection twice on Sunday and Tuesday to press home their demands.
