At least 15 people were injured in an attack by Awami League supporters on a group of students and locals in Gazipur. The incident occurred on Friday night, February 7, around 9:00 pm at the residence of AKM Mozammel Haque, the former Minister of Liberation War Affairs, in the Dhirashram area of Gazipur City Corporation.
According to police and local residents, a group of protesters approached Mozammel Haque’s house, and an announcement was made over a mosque loudspeaker, falsely labeling the group as robbers. Shortly after, Awami League leaders, supporters, and activists launched an attack on the crowd, beating them severely. At least 15 people were injured in the attack and were later sent to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for treatment.
Meanwhile, some outsiders took advantage of the chaos and looted Mozammel Haque’s house. Upon receiving the news, police and army personnel arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
A representative from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, who was among the injured, told reporters at the hospital that they had been working to raise awareness in various areas to prevent further attacks on homes. The group had been informing the public, providing contact numbers, and had also raised awareness in the Dhirashram area. They later received information that a group had entered Mozammel Haque’s house and was looting. When they went to intervene, a group of youth armed with knives, machetes, and other weapons attacked them, shouting “catch them” during the assault.
The representative also expressed frustration, claiming that the police arrived two and a half hours after the attack began and failed to take effective action. Several victims are reported to be in critical condition.
Gazipur Metropolitan’s Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (ADC-North) Robiul Islam confirmed the incident, noting that it stemmed from the ongoing protests across the country. According to him, the Anti-Discrimination Movement’s supporters had gone to the former minister’s house when they were attacked by Awami League supporters. Fourteen members of the Anti-Discrimination Movement were injured and are receiving treatment at the hospital. The matter is under investigation, and legal action is being taken.
